If you’re anything like me, you will have had a whopping hangover that leaves you bed ridden contemplating all the poor choices you’ve made the night before.
To start simply, a hangover is your body’s reaction to the consuming of alcohol, the basic symptoms include:
• Thirst - If you are incredibly thirsty or have a dry mouth.
• Headaches - Strong over powering aches, caused by alcohol being a vasodilator (causes blood vessels to widen and relax) which can commonly trigger headaches.
• Fatigue - Alcohol strongly affects your physical functioning, like not wanting to leave the dark depths of your bedroom, buried in layers of blankets, in an attempt to “sleep it off ”.
• Sensory problems - Most commonly dizziness, your brain is more sensitive to the world around you including light and sound.
Now, how can we combat this party pooper? Food can drastically help!
A common favourite people say is a fry up, but don’t be fooled by this gorgeous, greasy meal! It’s proven more nutritious breakfasts can help curb the dreaded hangover as your body has been passing nutrients and minerals through urination and sweat, so you need to stock your body back up on goods!
When you drink alcohol it decreases your body’s store of glutathione, which is important as without that your body struggles to break down those nasty toxic by-products of alcohol. But the secret is eggs! Eggs are rich in cysteine, an amino acid that your body uses to produce the antioxidant glutathione. This way it gets your body back up and running to help clean out the nasties.
2. Plenty of fruits and veggies.
I know, probably not what you wanted to hear, but these bad boys are excellent for getting you back up and running. For example;
Avocado, this superfood can help raise low potassium levels from dehydration, and also has a compound that can protect you from liver injury.
Banana. They are also useful for this reason, being a good source of potassium.
Blueberries fight inflammation within your body.
Oranges are also very appropriate for hangover curing, your mama probably taught you orange juice is good, and that’s for good reason, oranges are packed full of glorious vitamin C, helping to prevent the loss of glutathione, which is the antioxidant getting rid of alcohol from your system so this is a good one!
Potatoes! Breathe a sigh of relief as sweet potatoes are amazing to get you over a hangover faster. They contain such things as vitamin A, magnesium and potassium getting you back up to normal levels.
Let’s talk liquids!
Water of course is a fab way to rehydrate and replenish lost fluids.
Smoothies containing ginger are also super helpful as ginger is a handy remedy for nausea and can easily treat that upset stomach after drinking.
Green Tea is also effective, as a study in rats found it decreased blood alcohol concentration levels! Which could indicate it being helpful towards humans too.
Coconut water, mixing your fruit with water and getting an even better liquid to destroy that hangover. Whilst water helps with dehydration, the coconut contains sodium and potassium!
So instead of opting for the notorious fry up, substitute it for a hearty salad with a balanced smoothie, and you can enjoy that fry up when you’ve fully recovered and can appreciate it more.
